CCTV footage caught a man dumping waste and resulted in a hefty £400 fine.

Wiltshire Council was alerted to the incident and environmental enforcement officers used the vehicle registration number and insurance details to track the fly-tipper down.

The man from Calne was then handed a fixed penalty by the authority.

Fixed penalties for fly tipping were introduced in 2016 to allow local authorities in England to issue a £400 fine for small scale fly-tipping offences.

Wiltshire Council has recently adopted new powers to issue one for householders who give their waste to unlicensed waste collectors.

Two of them have been issued in recent weeks and the council has warned it will carry on handing them out and pursue prosecutions in more serious cases.

Bridget Wayman, cabinet member for waste said, “Wiltshire Council is committed to the crackdown on waste crimes, like fly-tipping.

"It costs the taxpayer millions per year in clean-up costs and is a significant blight on our local environment.

"We would like to thank the two quick witted individuals that captured the details and provided the CCTV footage that led to the culprit being caught”.
