THE Government’s move to suspend Parliament weeks before the Brexit deadline sparked outrage and support from Adver readers and MPs.

MPs were due to return from their summer break on Tuesday. But yesterday the Queen agreed to the Prime Minister’s proposal, which means Parliament is prorogued from September 10 to October 14, with the UK leaving the EU on October 31.

Boris Johnson hopes for a Queen’s Speech to be made after the suspension to outline his new agenda but it would give MPs less time to pass laws which would prevent a no-deal Brexit.

More than 540 Adver readers took part in our online poll, with 42 per cent deciding it the right thing to do to get Brexit done, but 58 per cent voting it an affront to democracy.

David King said: “Yes Boris, finally a man who means business and is delivering the will of the people.”

Adam Poole said: “Hardly surprising from an unelected government led by a liar that has no respect for democracy. Welcome to fascist Britain.”

Kenny Rycott said: “Go for it Boris! When this war is over, the democratic people of this country will remember the collaborators and the saboteurs.”

But Terry Sargent said: “This just defies belief. So much for democracy. Those in power should hang their heads in shame.”

South Swindon Brexit Party candidate Justin Stares said: “The government’s announcement is seen as positive by the Brexit Party because it makes a motion of no confidence, and a general election, more likely.

“There is however still a big unknown: will Boris Johnson push a rehashed version of Theresa May’s withdrawal agreement, which is hardly a Brexit at all, or will he go for a clean break Brexit?

“If it’s the former, then we’ll fight him every inch of the way. If it’s a clean break Johnson’s looking for, then we would like to help him secure a large majority in a general election.”

North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson said: “It is absolutely right that with a new PM we have a Queen’s Speech to deliver our legislative plans for recruiting 20,000 more police officers, improve frontline NHS care and properly fund our schools. For those wishing to thwart the clear democratic will of the British public, there is still ample Parliamentary time to do so but they should reflect carefully as, by not finally compromising, they could break trust in politics.”

Labour’s parliamentary candidate for south Swindon Sarah Church said: “Any prime minister who seeks to avoid the scrutiny of Parliament is undermining the most important pillar of our democracy – Parliamentary sovereignty.

“Forty seven million people voted for 650 MPs to represent them. Only a handful of Conservative Party members voted for a Johnson government. Johnson is a reckless man who is willing to sacrifice our economy, our businesses and jobs, and see ordinary people pay more for the basics.

“Anyone who supports this either does not understand or does not care for our interests as a nation. Johnson does not have the courage or honesty to face Parliament and he needs to go. A no-deal Brexit would be a disaster for businesses in Swindon.”

Justice secretary and south Swindon MP Robert Buckland would not speak to the Adver, but a Number 10 spokesman said: “The decision to end the parliamentary session, the longest in close to 400 years, will enable the prime minister to put a fresh domestic programme in front of MPs for debate and scrutiny.

“It will ensure that there is good time before and after the European Council for Parliament to further consider Brexit issues.” Votes on the Queen’s Speech are likely to be on October 21 and 22.
