AN OUT-OF-CONTROL bonfire spread over a garden and fence in the town centre before being put out.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service's control room received 12 999 calls from concerned neighbours on Prospect Hill who spotted the growing blaze.

The first call came in at 5.04pm yesterday and a crew of firefighters from Swindon fire station raced to the scene.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "Once in attendance, it was discovered that a bonfire had become out of control and spread to fence panels.

"Two hose reels used to extinguish the fire."

Earlier this summer, DWFRS wildfire advisor Andy Elliott said: “If you are burning off garden waste in the garden please site any bonfire well away from buildings, fences, trees and garden structures and have a garden hose to hand in case the fire starts to get out of control. If a fire does get out of control, please call 999."
