FOUR Swindon footballing legends teamed up to unveil a blue plaque commemorating club hero Harold Fleming.

A crowd formed outside the house in Durham Street on Saturday where the man who was one of Town's earliest stars lived.

Don Rogers, John Trollope, Frank Burrows and Andy Rowland joined fans for the ceremony organised by Swindon Heritage.

“I wasn’t expecting so many people to come and see it but it’s quite good," said Don, who was on the team for 15 years, during which he helped Swindon to the 1969 Football League Cup title and was in the England U23 team.

" I’ve learned a lot. He deserves the plaque and hopefully it will be there forever now. I didn’t know much about him I just knew about his shop and that he played for England but I didn’t know that he was the only Swindon player to do that.”

Mo Bushell, 62, the current owner of the house was delighted to see the plaque put up on her home. “I’m a little bit potty about history so I did some searching on the internet and his name came up. I was thrilled to find out, I was extremely pleased. He was an extraordinary player, she said.

Harold’s monument was paid for by numerous fans including the Sam Allen Fund, the Swindon Town Supporters Club and the Swindon Town Supporters Trust.

Noel Beauchamp who co-ordinates the blue plaque scheme run by the heritage group told the Adver: “This marks the ninth blue plaque that we’ve unveiled.

“It raises the awareness that Swindon, although an industrial town, it also had famous people living here and working here. The lady who owns the house now was delighted to find out that he lived here.”

Harold Fleming made 11 appearances for England between 1909 and 1914, scoring nine goals. But he made 336 appearances, scoring 204 goals, for Swindon Town. His achievements earned him a statue at the County Ground.
