A MAJOR Reading car park will be closed for three consecutive weekends, starting this week.

As part of the ongoing demolition of Friar Street Shopping Centre, which is being transformed for the Station Hill redevelopment, Garrard Street and the NCP car park will be closed on September 28-29; October 5-6 and October 11-12.

Station Hill developer Lincoln MGT was given planning permission by Reading Borough Council (RBC) to build two 12-storey buildings and build-to-rent homes.

The project caused a major issue last month, when scaffolding from the site collapsed in Garrard Street, injuring two people and closing the road for weeks.

Work has since resumed.

A spokesperson for Station Hill said: "We are progressing with the demolition of the Friar Street Shopping Centre as we continue to prepare the site for construction to begin on the transformative redevelopment of Station Hill.

"In order to complete the demolition of the shopping centre, we need to close Garrard Street over several weekends this Autumn.

"The NCP car park will also be closed over these weekends.

"These works mark a key step towards the delivery of a new neighbourhood comprising approximately 1,000 new homes for the rental market, quality modern office space, and a curated line up of shops and restaurants all linked together by attractive public realm.

"Once complete, Station Hill will become the new gateway to Reading that the town deserves as well as a new focal point for the local community and visitors."
