SWINDON MTB Enthusiast was set up in October 2014 by Joe Cox in bid to get more people out on bikes and support cyclists in Swindon.

The 31-year-old said: “I initially started the group as a chat forum so to speak so people could get advice on maintenance, gear to use etc.

“People within the group then wanted to meet for local rides and it really grew from there really. We then had more and more wanting to join and more people joining the club.

“We had grown so much in a space of two years that we had to take out public liability insurance for our ride leaders, create a club logo and lots more!”

The group has more than 1,000 members on Facebook. “Some are ‘paid’ members,” Joe said. “The card also lists any allergies so if that rider was to be found with an injury or medical condition, they could hand the card over to paramedics to get all the necessary details.

“Upon being a paid member, you also receive many discounts from bikes shops in and around Swindon, some online services and discount at trail centres around the country.”

Joe said he noticed an increase in people joining the club since cycling took off due to the Tour de Yorkshire and the mounting bike scene having more coverage in the media.

He said: “I believe more and more people are seeing them and wanting a bit of action, as well as keeping themselves fit, which cycling is great for! Plus, the socialising side of it just tops it off.

“Every time, we go out, you’re guaranteed to have a laugh also. We are a friendly, social, fun and accommodating club.

“We cater for all abilities, so all abilities are welcome, from beginner to expert.”

The group is hosting weekly rides, with more information available on their Facebook group.

Joe added: “We also rides for all abilities at places like the forest of Dean, Wales and other beautiful spots around the UK.

“All our ride leaders are trained; first aid trained and have public liability insurance. I think that covers it all.”
