HUNDREDS of people have signed a petition in a bid to keep the town centre Morrisons open.

Last month the supermarket company admitted the store at Regent Circus was being considered for closure along with three others.

So Stan Pajak, the Liberal Democrat councillor for Eastcott launched a petition urging bosses at the Bradford company to reconsider – and so far more than 1,000 people have signed it.

Here's what you said on Facebook...

Paul Alibone: Isn't the problem the parking? I can go to Sainsbury's and shop without the risk of fines like some have had. Being in the town centre there isn't really an option but to charge, I suppose.

Samantha Sealey: The development of this site has failed. The site's location was never going to be a success and those that approved investment from the public and private sectors should be held to account. A complete waste of money. It was uneconomical to choose that site for the size of the store.

Mark Keylock: Oh wow, hundreds sign! Is this a village we live in? If it's needed that much surely it should be 'thousands sign'? It's going, it won't be kept. It's all down to the useless, greedy council just like all the other empty shops in this town!

David Charter: Sadly I think signing a petition will do nothing. It’s all about profit. To make a difference if each petition signed spent over £50 in the shop every week that might just help.

Jeanette Gale: Come on Swindon Borough Council – do something to keep it. It might not mean anything to you but it does to the locals and surroundings. Have a heart and save it from closing its doors.

James Stacey: They would have local shops to fall back on if they’d hadn’t have taken their money to the mainstream supermarkets. Probably good news for smaller shops that have survived it.

Michael J Hinde: All Morrisons or any business really cares about is profit (fairly). Quit signing your name and buy more stuff if you want them to stay!

Rob Watson: Gone downhill massively since the revamp. Lots of products discontinued. Fewer choices on what they have got. It’s not a town centre shop, should just concentrate on being a supermarket!

Sandra Edmondson: Expensive compared to Asda and others.

Simon Cousens: Hate to say it but this is a business decision, no petition will save it.

Ali Butler: So people will save food stores. The thing is there are a few food stores in town, but no one did anything about the only Argos in town. Now we have lost it. It's okay for people who have cars that can get to Greenbridge.

David Gartside: It's the same with everything. If it doesn't make a profit it goes. People want to get off their backsides and use these shops regularly and give them a reason not to close them.

And here are some of the comments we received on our website:

Casual observer: Good luck to him, he's at least trying to save something that's good in this area. The store may not be perfect but it's got to be better than yet another empty unit.

Morsey: We've discovered the Morrisons restaurant not only has a very good range of well presented

and comfortably priced meals and drinks, it is clean, tidy, with excellent staff and a handy shop if you need a couple of things, but not really convenient in other ways. The accessibility on foot, across that

death-trap crossing, the massive incline to ascend to get to the shop, paid for car parking from Victoria Road, it just doesn't seem well-planned at all.
