Swindon Town Supporters' Trust has praised promises by Labour to grant more powers to fans to give them, more control over how a football club is run.

One of Labour’s key pledges was the ability for trusts to appoint and remove at least two members of a board as well as the opportunity to buy shares in the club when a team changes hands.

Vice-chairman of the Swindon group Rob Angus said: “What they have promised is more transparency, which can only be a good thing. Given with what happened to Bury and Bolton, the current regulation from the Football League and the FA isn’t where it needs to be.

“However, anything that happens needs to be proportionate so that is doesn’t prevent future investment.”

Alongside changes to a club’s board, Labour has promised more investment into grassroots football and more emphasis on women’s football.

Labour candidate for South Swindon Sarah Church said “We are in huge favour of the announcement.

"We know how important the football club is to the town and we want to ensure that future generations get to enjoy it.

"Seeing the issues Bury and Bolton have gone through recently has brought home how fragile football clubs can be.

"Making it a fairer and more sustainable system for all is the best way to keep clubs such as Swindon in business."
