It’s all hot air

“Tougher measures are being introduced to crack down on cyclists, skaters and others in the town centre”(SA, October 5)

How many times has the council blown hot air over this issue?

The idea is to ‘nip it in the bud,’ said a council spokesman -The anti-social behaviour has been going on for years!

Last time they issued warnings I witnessed a cyclist race past two coppers by inches in the town centre. Deep in conversation, discussing Swindon’s town centre’s anti-social behaviour problem no doubt, they battered not an eyelid.

Once again officials will “ attempt to warn wrongdoers to change their ways, or face sterner measures.”

Give it a week or two and the usual anti-social behaviour will return. These cyclist yobs have the full measure of this ‘council,-hot air and useless. They should have waited until next April the first for the announcement- THAT would have made sense.

Establishment fear

In reply to Steve Rouse (SA, October 9) he states it must be a very strange kind of shop steward who is not aware that Johnson and company are part of the establishment, clearly referring to me.

Let me correct him on the aforementioned.

I am very aware that Boris and company are part of the establishment.

But even many of the establishment fear ignoring the power of the people and their democratic vote at the ballot box. Perhaps Mr Rouse would like to tell us his alternative solution to Boris Johnson to implement Brexit. Jeremy Corbyn, the Lib Dems, the SNP? I thought not.

He then states it was an elite right wing attempt to fix a rift in the Tory party that caused the Brexit rift.

I thought it was because Cameron was running scared of UKIP he held the referendum, and the mess we are in is because of a Remain dominated parliament, left and right wing, determined to defy the democratic vote of 17.4 million people in case they have to earn their living instead of being nodding donkeys to foreign powers with no interest in the welfare of the United Kingdom except for using us as a money pit for their own ends, taking our fishing rights and opening our borders to all and sundry.

Rail travel out of reach

I read the Swindon Advertiser special report (Oct 9) on the upgrade of the Great Western Railway which now seems to have been completed.

It seems that the upgrade will reduce the Swindon to London travelling time by ten minutes. I researched the cost of the upgrade and it seems to be somewhere around £10bn. That means it has cost a billion pounds for every minute saved in travelling time.

I am a railway lover. I used to be a regular rail traveller fifty years ago but not any more. The cost of rail travel is now way out of my reach. The privatisation of the railway has been a disaster for people like me that love the railways but can no longer afford to use it.
