The Advertiser went on patrol with a joint team of inSwindon BID and Swindon Borough Council staff in the town centre.

The group were patrolling the new public space protection order area to enforce the rules that are in place which includes cycling and skateboarding in the town centre.

Here’s what you said on Facebook:

Allan Bott: “You’ve not been able to cycle of skate for years in town, but look around, no one cares or listens.

“Who polices it?”

Ian Cooksley: “Did you know that absolutely no one pays even the slightest attention to the law?

“It’s like the ‘no smoking outside the hospital’ one.”

Martyn Pearce: “Back a few years ago the BID employed a street team that cared about the town centre and the people that use it.

“Now you hardly ever see the street team, even though they have red jackets or polo shirts on.

“Or if you do see them, they just ignore the fact that someone is cycling past them, yes I have witnessed this.”

Matthew Sirrelle: “Can’t shop there either.”

Angie Tucker: “They’re skating and riding bikes all the time, I’ve nearly been hit by a bike.”

Tom Hardy: “I was nearly run over by a man on a bike in town.”

Lara Brewer: “Kids and adults don’t care that you’re not allowed to ride through the town centre.

“Before my legs got bad I used to purposely stand in a bikers way to stop them and then whilst they were swearing at me I’d shout over them that they aren’t supposed to ride through but they carried on.”

Tony Gray: “Who actually cares? Why don’t they stick a lane in the middle?

“Ridiculous and if kids had anywhere to be on bikes and scooters then the problem might not be so bad.”

Paul Reid: “The council and police have done very little to enforce these rules.

“Start issuing the fines, hire extra staff if you have to.

“In the short term it will pay for itself as you have so many flaunting the rules.

“Yes, there will be lots of arguments and plenty of arrests too I imagine.

“Until you establish a reputation that breaking the rules has real consequences, people will continue to see you as a joke and do whatever they want.”

Chris Challice: “I got stopped cycling through years ago by a plastic police officer.

“He’s telling me I can’t cycle there whilst at least six others cycled right next to us.”

Colin Crowther: “The signs are small and not on every entrance to the shopping centre.

“This needs to be policed regularly by officials that can issue fines and a safe cycle route to link up the main cycle routes that stop by the town centre.”

Glyn Evans: “Need to sort out Orbital shops with bikes. Someone will get hurt.”

Maria Phillips: “And the council wonder why people don’t go into town anymore!

“What with the number of drunks around and people racing through the town centre it’s simple. They need to make it a covered town centre shopping centre and leave smaller parts for policing.”

Lauren Curtis: “Wasn’t this issued a long time ago? And still not being followed.

“My son was almost knocked over by someone on their bike, happens all the time. Witnessed an older man almost knocked over due to someone being careless.”

Amtal Ahmed: “I witnessed, at regent circus, a group of boys that were riding bikes on the Nando’s stairs. They were coming down so fast they could have easily hurt someone.”
