Swingout Swindon is a club that wants everyone to get their dancing shoes on.

It has been running for the past five years offering swing dance lessons to the local community.

Erica Fowers, who runs Swingout Swindon with her husband Cliff, said: “We started the group because there was nothing local offering swing dance classes, and we were regularly being asked if we taught when people saw us dance.”

The couple have been dancing together for15 years and first met on the dancefloor.

Swingout Swindon offers two beginners' classes and two improvers' classes per week, out of the venues Swindon Dance, Regent Circus, SN1 1QF and Broad Town Village Hall, Broad Town Road, SN4 7RL.

“We focus on lindy hop as our main style of dance, which does includes some Charleston moves,” added Erica.

“Plus we have separate sessions for teaching performance routines,” she said.

The club frequently gets asked to perform, as well as hosts social dances, workshops and private tuition.

The organisation is open to anyone who wants to take up the hobby, and no previous dance experience is necessary for the beginners' class.

Erica continued: “We have taught hundreds of people over the past five years.”

Although swing dancing is partner dancing, there is no requirement to bring a partner along if you want to take part, as all partners are rotated throughout the sessions to ensure everyone has a chance to dance.

Erica continued: “Our classes have grown because dance is a great way for adults to step out of their normal day to day stuff and enjoy time with others socially whilst learning a new skill. Plus it’s a blast!” she added.

The majority of the dancing is to popular swing music from the 1920s - 1950s.

Erica continued: “There has been lots of research done which proves that dance is good for mind body and soul.”

Participants are not required to wear special footwear although the club encourages participants to where comfortable and supportive shoes that don’t have too much grip.

“Our classes are fun, friendly and inclusive to all,” said Erica.
