YOUNG women are more likely to be victims of domestic abuse than any other group.

A Swindon Borough Council report into domestic violence in the town found that more than one in 10 women aged 16 to 19 reported being exposed to abuse. That compared to two per cent of men aged 55 to 59.

In areas where the population was younger the domestic abuse rate tends to be higher.

A new Women’s Aid campaign, Love Respect, is aimed specifically at young people. It highlights the characteristics of a “healthy relationship”, which it is claimed has been blurred by decades of TV and films where the determined stalker gets his girl.

Holly Bourne, an author and ambassador for the campaign, wrote in the Guardian this month: We are rarely more vulnerable than when we are in love – particularly when we are in love for the first time. Educating young people on abusive behaviours in a relationship isn’t ‘the death of romance’ – it’s about making everyone realise that abuse was never romantic to begin with.”

While young people frequently report being the victim of domestic abuse, the scourge can affect all ages and backgrounds.

It is a point pressed home in the open letter written by Ricky Wilding’s former partner Maria Hopkins to other victims: “Anyone could find themselves in an abusive relationship. Domestic abuse does not have a particular ‘look’. It can happen to any relationship behind closed doors, so it’s especially important for everyone to be vigilant and look out for friends and family.

“I know that so many people think it is impossible to escape an abusive relationship, especially those who have children, but it is so important to prioritise their wellbeing as well as your own.”

“I’d urge anyone to report information to the police if they are in an abusive relationship.”
