A NEW campaign aims to educate shoppers on the importance of putting Fairtrade products in their shopping baskets.

The Midcounties Co-operative is marking the 25th anniversary of Fairtrade by launching the #1Swap campaign in its stores throughout Wiltshire, inviting shoppers to exchange one item in their shopping basket for a product with a Fairtrade certification logo.

This initiative will help farmers get a fair price and support better working conditions for suppliers.

Regional communities ambassador for White Horse at The Midcounties Co-operative Darren Addams said: " Fairtrade is so important to us, and we hope that our activities here in Wiltshire will help to highlight Fairtrade's ongoing efforts to support better welfare for food producers, and prompt more people to make kinder decisions when they do their shopping.

"If we can encourage all of our shoppers and members to embrace our campaign and include one more Fairtrade item in their basket, we can collectively make a huge difference to the lives of farmers across the globe."

The group organised a launch event at its store in Highworth to explain the benefits of taking part in this campaign.

More than 200 visitors attended the event and more than £100 were raised for Alzheimer's support group The October Club.
