Prime minister Boris Johnson announced that he will push for a December general election.

Mr Johnson aims to table a motion in the House of Commons on Monday which proposes calling a general election on December 12.

He told ITV News: "The way to get Brexit done is to be reasonable with Parliament and if they genuinely want more time to study this excellent deal, they can have it but they have to agree to a general election on December 12.

"That's the way forward because this Parliament has been going a long time without a majority, it's refusing to deliver Brexit and impossible to deliver legislation.

"It's time the opposition summed up the nerve to submit themselves to our collective boss, the people of the UK."

If a two-thirds majority of MPs vote for the motion, it will pass and an election will go ahead.

The PM's two previous attempts to call an election have been blocked because Labour refused to support him.
