THERE have been calls for better security in an underpass dubbed “mugger’s alley” following a series of violent incidents.

In one recent case a man was chased from the tunnel between Station Road and Ferndale by a gang of masked youths. He was stabbed in the buttocks and leg.

Previous incidents include a stabbing in June and a knife killing five years ago

Here’s what you said on Facebook...

Sam Kilby: This has been dangerous for years. I am in late 30s and remember my mum telling me the police stopped her from walking through there with me in my pushchair until some others came through to walk with her.

Helen Mooring: Just don’t go down there, look for an alternate route if it’s a longer way round then so be it and don’t go alone it’s that simple -common sense or is that something people don’t have nowadays.

Kevin Webb: Every body is saying the same thing. These people are a threat to everybody who walks the streets, and that means you. They need to be caught and sentenced properly, meaning long term jail, and hard punishment. Please, will someone in authority take notice.

Jill Little: Walk this way regularly and have done so for the last 30 years at all times of the day and night and never had any problems. This part of Swindon is no worse than any where else in Swindon and is much safer than many.

Jo Bown: Police at each end where CCTV cameras are not. Use the tax money you take from us and make swindon safe. Make it a underground that is safe where you can walk through and can only access at each end. Have cameras all the way down. Instead of trying to make town centre better. Make places like this safe. Will bring more people onto Swindon and the people living there more safe.

Louisa Jane: I hate that underpass I would rather walk the long way round to not have to walk under there.

Rob Lancaster: Harsher sentences for thugs who roam in gangs with knives. No real deterrents nowadays!

Ben Fiocca: Turn it into a one way road to help ease the snow dome traffic and keep the other half as pedestrian. Or instead of a road, a tramway or something.

Catherine Queen: If those who stabbed others actually got punished correctly, maybe there would be fewer stabbings. If those even associated with a group like that got punished also, maybe those wielding the knife would feel so sure of themselves. Harsher penalties for criminals of violent attacks. No more sympathy given to the wrong people. They will always find somewhere to attack people otherwise.

Charlotte Louise Smith: We all shouldn’t have to be worried or scared to walk through an underpass. Next everyone will be scared walking anywhere. We should be safe in our home town and not worry about being stabbed or mugged on a walk somewhere. So wouldn’t class that as common sense to be honest. These things just shouldn’t happen? That’s common sense.

Tom Shezer: Being caught is a much more effective deterrent than the punishment.

Lee Thomas: Where does Councillor Heenan think the funds that the PCC uses comes from?? Central government, our taxes, and the council tax precept, again our taxes, sort it amongst yourselves, stop passing the buck.

Fernando Faria: I think we all should stop paying council tax as a protest.

Amanda Burnett: It’s super dark and a bit eery at night. Never again!

Christian Kostiuk: Same problem with this underpass for years now. This is 2019... Sort it out.
