This week we brought you news that Thomas Griffiths will serve at least 12 years and six months for the murder of schoolgirl Ellie Gould. The 17-year-old girl’s family remained stony-faced as presiding judge Mr Justice Garnham sentenced Griffiths, now 18, to life imprisonment. He must serve at least 12 years and six months of his life sentence. Griffiths, formerly of Lansdowne Crescent, Derry Hill, stabbed ex-girlfriend Ellie Gould at least 13 times in the neck in the kitchen of her Calne home on May 3.

Here’s what you had to say on Facebook:

Patricia Bonella: Life should mean what it says. He has taken the life of a beautiful young girl and deserves to be incarcerated forever. I would never forgive him.

Derek Milner: Simple - an eye for an eye - bring back the death penalty and get rid of what no one needs or needs to pay for, just so they stay alive.

Kirsty Brine: An absolute joke. He should serve life when he has a “life” sentence. Crazy how this world works sometimes!

Steve Johnson: 12.5 years is absolutely disgusting! Only given due to his age. He’s 18 an adult and should be tried as one. Absolutely disgraceful. Minimum 25 years. He shouldn’t have the chance to start a family and go on holidays etc. He should be in jail until the good years have passed. I’m sure the Bulger killers got a similar sentence and they were actual kids.

Tuppence Hill: Desperately sad, such a horrendous tragedy. Bless you Ellie

June Gladwin Should be longer RIP Ellie

Lesley Padfield: absolutely barbaric, he deserves no mercy.

I feel so much for her family RIP Ellie.

Eva Lewis: This story is breaking me. I have a daughter myself and the thought of what Ellie's family has gone and will continue to go through is devastating. I could never come to terms with knowing the killer could come out in 12 years. Maybe I'm not a compassionate enough human being, but it just doesn't feel like justice even remotely. To Ellie's family and friends, you're in my heart, I can't begin to imagine the devastation. May you all find peace and strength.

Barry Jackson: So he will be out when he’s 30! So how is this a life sentence then? Ellie could have lived into her eighties but he has prevented this by brutally murdering her! He’ll get free food, tv, education classes and quite possibly a new identity. There is a possibility that he could live into his eighties so when he’s released will still have 50 plus years of freedom! And this is justice? My heart goes out to Ellie’s family and friends!

David Choonage: Life should be exactly that, life in prison with no chance to get out, what chance does the poor victim and her family have, the justice system in this country needs a complete overhaul.

Dennis Nellany: He should never be released. No ifs or buts. He only pleaded guilty and faked remorse because he was intelligent and calculating enough to know it meant less jail time.

Stacey Wall: 12 years is disgustingly short. I hope this is reviewed and increased.

AFTER news that Wiltshire Council has secured £75m to build a relief road in Chippenham, protestors have renewed their objections to the plan which would also bring 7,500 new houses to the town. The council received the cash from central government, using their Housing Infrastructure Fund, to build a road which will connect the north and south points of Chippenham on the eastern side. The council believe this will reduce traffic delays in and around the town as well as open up space for 7,500 homes to be built.

Peter Budds: Good, I’m all for it , I like progress , it will give employment opportunities for the young as well, help to alleviate traffic going through Chippenham as well.

David Wood: Still massive bottle neck from yarnbrook through Westbury though.

Mike Beel How about making more entrances and exits out of Bumpers Farm industrial estate? That’s a nightmare at peak times!

Chris Maidment: The new bypass for yarn brook and west Ashton should begin next year as part of the planned Ashton park development.
