THOUSANDS of people are expected to pack out the town centre tonight to watch JLS star Aston Merrygold switch on the Christmas lights.

The former boyband member will perform a 20-minute live set before the big moment at 6pm, which will set off a fireworks display lasting ten minutes.

Before that, he will be joined on the line-up by Swindon singers Billie and Louie, Wyvern Theatre panto stars Michelle Collins and Chris Jarvis, and young students from PQA Swindon and Swindon Dance.

inSwindon BID chief executive Di Powell said: ‘Our lights switch-on is a firm favourite and this year it will launch the Festival of Christmas which celebrates everything Christmas taking place in Swindon town centre across the festive season.

“We’ve been working hard behind the scenes for months with local partners and businesses to provide activity for everyone to enjoy.

“I’d encourage everyone to come along, come in early, enjoy some Christmas shopping and rest up in one our town centre’s many café, bars and restaurants.”

Free festive fun for all the family will be available around the town centre. Santa will set up his grotto in the upper plaza of the Brunel Shopping Centre from noon until 5.30pm before appearing on the main stage with Swindon mayor Kevin Parry.

Havelock Square will be full of street market stalls including espresso Martinis and hot chocolates from Bar Cavallo, slices of stone-baked pizza from Bella Mia Pizza and cupcakes from GlamoRose.

Plus, Swindon and Wiltshire Pride will offer gifts, Hill’s Funfairs will host children’s activities, Triple 2 Coffee will supply mince pies, mulled wine and Bailey’s hot chocolate, and Jones’ Catering will give out free donuts.
