OLYMPIAN Ben Fletcher was in Devizes to help a primary school celebrate the opening of a new all-weather sports pitch.

Wansdyke Primary set a target of raising £50,000 for the area in a bid to help its fitness drive for pupils.

Head Charlotte Robinson said: “At Wansdyke School we firmly believe that our children should have the opportunity to live healthy and active lives.

“A positive experience of sport and physical activity at a young age can build a lifetime habit of participation. Physical activity has numerous benefits for children’s physical health, as well as their mental wellbeing; increasing self-esteem and emotional wellbeing and lowering anxiety and depression.

“Children become happier and more resilient when they take part in exercise.

“We are really excited to be able to use this additional resource all year round.”

The money came from the school’s Sport Premium funding from the government, its own reserves and £10,000 raised by the Friends of Wansdyke.
