BT is planning to remove a public payphone from Highworth unless people in the area want to keep it.

The phone box on Swindon Street has only been used for 11 calls according to BT, though the company did not reveal the timeframe during which these calls were made.

Depending on the feedback received from residents, the town council will either agree to the removal or object to to it on the grounds that it's needed in the area for emergency calls near an accident blackspot, in an area with poor mobile phone signal, or for use by neighbours on low income who may not have a mobile.

Alternatively, the phone box could be adopted by the community for £1 and used for community benefits like a little library.

Responses should be sent by December 13 by email to forwardplanning@swindon.gov.uk or by post to Forward Planning, Swindon Borough Council, Wat Tyler West House, fifth floor, Beckhampton Street, Swindon, SN1 2JG
