Robert Buckland the Conservative candidate for South Swindon, and the serving Justice Secretary has hailed his party's plans to cut drug-related deaths and addiction.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced a government-wide addiction strategy, including problem gambling for the first time, which would see a special central monitoring unit set up.
The plan would also try to address over-prescribing of opioids and abuse of prescription medicines.
Mr Buckland said: "During my nine years as MP for South Swindon, I have met and supported numerous families here who have very sadly been affected by addiction. I also work closely with key local agencies to support those with addictions, and their families. Sadly, I have seen first-hand during my long career in the justice system how addiction can lead to criminality, mental health problems and family breakdown.
“If we are re-elected I look forward to supporting my friend and Cabinet colleague Matt Hancock, the Health Secretary, as we implement this bold and ambitious strategy to help many thousands of people across the country.”
Also standing in South Swindon are Labour's Sarah Church, and Liberal Democrat Stan Pajak
