ARMED police swooped after hearing reports of gunfire at an address close to the town centre this morning.

Officers were called just after 4am after hearing a window had been smashed at a property in Westcott Place.

A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and a weapon seized.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “A man has been arrested after we received a report that window had been smashed by someone firing a weapon in Swindon.

“We were called shortly after 4am this morning (11/12) to a report of criminal damage at an address in Westcott Place.

“Due to the nature of the incident, armed officers were deployed and arrested a man at a property in the same street.

“The matter was resolved swiftly and safely, with the scene clear by 6am. Nobody was injured.

“A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and is currently in custody at Gablecross Police Station.

“A weapon has also been seized. Tests will be carried out on the weapon seized to clarify exactly what it is."
