A father of two from Chippenham died after being hit by an ambulance on the A34 near Oxford.

Adrian Bourne, 35, died on the northbound carriageway near the Peartree interchange in the early hours of Friday, November 29.

Thames Valley Police said he died at the scene. They have issued an appeal for witnesses and dash cam footage.

It is believed Mr Bourne was in the Oxford area for a work Christmas party.

He leaves a partner, who did not wish to be named, and two children aged five and three.

Mr Bourne was a former pupil of George Ward School in Melksham and has family connections to the area. He used to play football for Semington Magpies.

An inquest into his death opens in Oxford on Thursday. Darren Salter, the senior coroner for Oxfordshire, is expected to adjourn it to a date to be fixed.

Mr Bourne’s funeral is scheduled to be held at the West Wiltshire Crematorium at Semington on Wednesday, December 18.

A minute’s silence was held before kick-off in Saturday’s Trowbridge League football match between Semington Magpies and Staverton in memory of the former Semington player.

Mr Bourne is believed to have walked about five miles (8km) to the A34 dual carriageway from Oxford city centre.

The ambulance was not answering an emergency call at the time, South Central Ambulance Service said.

Mark Ainsworth, director of operations at SCAS, said: “I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the family and friends of the pedestrian who sadly died following a collision with one of our ambulances on the A34.”

“The ambulance was not travelling under emergency driving conditions at the time.“The trust and the ambulance crew are assisting Thames Valley Police with its investigation into the collision.

“It is normal practice in such circumstances for the driver of the vehicle to be suspended from driving duties whilst any external and internal investigations are undertaken.”

Investigating officer Det Con Rob Turpin, of the serious collision investigation unit at Bicester police station, called it a “tragic incident”.

He appealed for anyone who saw the man in the northbound carriageway of the A34 at a time prior to the collision taking place to come forward.

He said: “I would also like to ask that any motorists who have dashcams in their cars and were driving near the area at this time review their footage to see if there is anything significant on there.”

“If anyone saw this man in the time before the collision, please contact Thames Valley Police on 101, and quote 43190372771.”
