A CO-OP in Wroughton will close its doors on April 4.

Casey Cobb, the duty manager at the store on the High Street, told the Adver yesterday it would be shutting for good.

She said: “It is closing, on April 4. I’m not sure how many jobs are at risk.”

Ms Cobb added she ‘didn’t have a clue’ as to why the store was being closed.

A spokesman for Co-op midcounties said: "All colleagues will transfer to other local stores.

"We expect most will move to our Devizes Road store, which is very close by.

"The Post Office will also move to the Devizes Road store in April, ensuring its services are available to our local customers.

"This means that we will be offering continuous employment to our colleagues and continue to trade in the area following the closure of the High Street store in April.

"All colleagues have been informed about our plans."

On the Wroughton Facebook group, regular visitors to the store spoke of their dismay at the closure and concerns that the location will just be used for new flats.

Jason Spickett said: “Another bit of the character of the village consigned to the history books.”

Maria Rooney added: “The soul is being ripped out of our village.”
