A CYCLIST who came to a group of addicts’ aid after their original drug dealer failed to show never thought he’d be caught by police.

Jamie Webber had racked up a cannabis debt to dealers and offered a chance to clear the debt by selling drugs for the gang for a day.

The 21-year-old told probation officers he never realised the seriousness of what he was doing and never thought he’d be caught on the first day he was dealing drugs.

Now, he has been jailed for two and a half years.

Swindon Crown Court heard addicts had gathered off Tovey Road, Pinehurst, on August 29 last year waiting for a drop-off from the Sanchez County Lines drugs line.

The dealer failed to show. The addicts spoke to youths in the park and shortly after two more young men appeared. Webber was one of them.

Tessa Hingston, prosecuting, said Webber told the addicts – which included two undercover police officers – he was not working for the Sanchez line and his deals were “doubles”.

An undercover officer known only as Steve handed over £20 in exchange for two wraps of heroin and crack cocaine.

Interviewed by police, Webber denied being involved in drug dealing. However, when he spoke to probation officers on Friday morning he said he had hoped to clear his debt and make some money on the side.

Webber, of Beech Avenue, Pinehurst, pleaded guilty at the magistrates’ court to supplying class A drugs.

Emma Handslip, defending, said her client was remorseful and had made strides to turn his life around.

Jailing Webber, Judge Jason Taylor QC said Webber had got involved with drugs “with his eyes open”. He added: “I would be failing in my duty If I was not passing a custodial sentence.”
