The much-awaited and long-delayed reconstruction of Abbey Stadium in Blunsdon St Andrew could leap its highest barrier to date.

The plans put forward by Gaming International, the owner of the speedway and greyhound racing track, for the demolition of the ageing structure and compete rebuilding, moving the main spectator stand and facilities to the other side of the track will be discussed by members of Swindon Borough Council’s planning committee tonight.

The renovation already has outline planning permission, but the design and layout and access arrangements for the stadium still have to be signed off by the members of the committee.

This meeting was postponed from autumn to allow the stadium’s acoustic consultants and the borough council’s planning officers more time to address concerns about noise nuisance to people living near the racetrack from the speedway meetings, especially since many new houses have been built nearby.

The meeting starts at 6pm tonight at the civic offices.
