MUSICIANS and singers are being encouraged to apply for this year’s Swindon Music Festival.

The event returns in March but anyone wishing to take part in its competitive classes and try to take home a trophy must be quick – the entry deadline is coming up fast.

Chairman Geoff Walters said: “There are so many talented musicians and singers performing in this festival.

“We want as many people as possible to apply and welcome guests of all ages to support the event by coming along and listen to the wonderful sessions.

“My grandfather was part of the first festival committee in 1909 and my father was the festival chairman so I have a big family connection with it and am very passionate about seeing it thrive.”

The programme for the 11th Swindon Music Festival is coming together but there’s still time for last-minute entries before the deadline on Friday.

To make applications easier to submit than ever before, the organisers have put together an online form for the first time. Alternatively, pick up a syllabus from Holmes Music, Swindon, and Brian Taylor's Music Shop in Wootton Bassett and send the entry form in by post.

The musical spectacular kicks off on Friday March 20 at Christ Church in Old Town with classes for the church organ, adult choirs and church choirs.

The rest of the competitions will be held at the Arts Centre from Saturday March 21 to Saturday March 28. Musicians and singers of all ages will only have five minutes to show off their skills and impress by singing or playing a piece of music of their choice.

Adrian Goss, Elizabeth Childs and Rebecca Moseley-Morgan will adjudicate, with Paul Turner returning as festival accompanist.

A full official programme with the final list of entrants and performances will be available in March.
