A GRIEVING brother is raising money for a disability home in his brother's memory.

Darren Coxhead is putting on a darts competition at the Swiss Chalet pub in Chapel Street, Gorse Hill.

He is raising cash for the White Horse Care Trust at Masefield Avenue, which looked after his disabled brother Gareth.

The 34-year-old, of Stratton, said: “He was there from the age of 20.

"There are people there who helped him to change and eat because he couldn’t do it himself.

“He was looked after by my mum growing up and then he moved there to be looked after once he was older.

"He was so happy all the time he always put a smile on everyone’s faces. When he died it was just so out of the blue.”

Gareth was born with spastic quadriplegia, which causes spasms in his limbs making it difficult for him to be independent. Last October he died from aspirated pneumonia – an infection of the lung – aged just 32.

Now the home is updating a room for its residents where they can socialise and play games in memory of Gareth.

This will cost around £1,000.

So Darren decided to hold the darts competition to help cover the cost.

He told the Adver: “He loved living at the home and so I just want to raise as much as I can to help them.

“I’ve been in contact with a number of companies and businesses based in Swindon to see if they will donate prizes for our raffle.

“I’ve always played darts since I was 15 and I enjoy it. It just seemed the perfect idea to do a competition and a raffle so everyone can get involved.”

So far Buzz Gym has donated one week passes for two people, Swindon Robins has given tickets, and vouchers for a cut and blow-dry has been donated.

The competition is on February 1 and starts at 2pm. Entry is £5 and can be purchased on the door.
