A 15-YEAR-OLD boy is today being questioned by detectives on suspicion of murder following the death of a 17-year-old teen.

Officers were called to reports of an assault in the Lindsay Road area of Thornhill at 6.15am yesterday.

They found the 17-year-old with a stab wound and he was rushed to hospital in a serious condition.

Yesterday afternoon Hampshire Police said he had died.

Detective Chief Inspector Liz Williams said: “We are still investigating how this young man has lost his life, and I would urge anyone who has any information – however insignificant they think it may be – to come forward and help us.

“We are conducting extra patrols in the Thornhill area; please either talk to our officers or call 101 quoting Operation Tint if you know anything that may help us. You can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

“I understand that people in the community will be shocked and concerned by an incident like this, but I would ask people to please support our investigation and refrain from speculating on social media.”

A 15-year-old boy, from Andover, was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

He was re-arrested on suspicion of murder after the 17-year-old died.

A large police presence was in place throughout the day, while a cordon remained in force across the residential area.

Residents reported seeing a host of police cars, along with the ambulance service, at the scene shortly after the incident.

Yesterday afternoon, residents in the area spoke of their shock after hearing what had happened.

One member of the community, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “I heard shouting and arguing in the morning.

“It’s so sad it happened to someone so young.”

Another added: “It’s frightening. I opening the curtains and saw the road all cordoned off.

“It’s sickening that it has happened to a child. Knife crime is disgusting. It’s always been quiet. It is shocking that it is on our door step.”

A Hampshire Police spokeswoman said: “We were called at 6.15am on Sunday, January 19, to reports of an assault in the Lindsay Road area of Thornhill.

“On arrival, officers found a 17 year-old boy with a stab wound. He is currently being treated in Southampton General Hospital and is in a serious condition.

“A 15 year-old boy from Andover has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He remains in police custody at this time.
