The A4 near Marlborough is now re-opened after a car crash and downed electrical cable have closed the road earlier today.

Earlier, drivers were warned to avoid the A4 at West Kennet near Marlborough following a crash which brought down electricity power cables.

Wiltshire Police had advised drivers to seek alternative routes as the stretch of road from the Beckhampton Roundabout to the West Kennet junction was closed. Access to the A4 via the B4003 from Avebury was also affected.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “We were called to a single-vehicle road traffic collision on the A4 near Avebury at 8.15am this morning (27/01).

“A van had collided with a telegraph pole, which had caused power lines to fall.

“Nobody was injured.

“Emergency services contacted the local authority and the electricity company to assist with the incident.

“The West Kennet Road has been closed, as has the A4 between Marlborough to Beckhampton, and diversions put in place.

“Traffic has been building up in the area and we would advise motorists to find alternative routes.”

The closure lasted for several hours while officers and the emergency services worked to clear the road which finally opened just after 2pm

Scottish & Southern Energy said the SN8 postcode area is affected. Power is not expected to be fully restored until 3pm.
