POLICE have arrested a man for drug driving after finding packets of what is believed to be amphetamines in a car that crashed on the A419 today.

They were called to the two vehicle collision involving a Ford Fiesta and a Kia C’eed on the southbound carriageway close to the Castle Eaton turn-off, at around 9.40am.

Nobody was hurt, but when police searched the Fiesta they discovered what is thought to be amphetamines inside.

A 26-year-old from Manchester was arrested on suspicion of driving while over the legal alcohol limit, driving while over the specified limit of a controlled drug, driving while unfit through drugs and possession with intent to supply amphetamines.

He was taken to custody at Gablecross Police Station.

PC Craig Beales, from Swindon Community Policing Team, said: “Thankfully this didn’t turn out to be a serious collision and nobody was hurt. But it was a great find by the attending officers, who quickly picked up on the driver’s demeanour and carried out a thorough search of the vehicle, locating these drugs.

“Obviously, our enquiries are at an early stage, but this case appears to highlight the ongoing issue of illegal drugs being brought into our county from elsewhere and we will continue to take action to tackle the problem.”
