A SURVEY revealed Swindon is one of the best places to live in Britain.

In the newest Halifax Quality of Life survey, the town was ranked 45th out of hundreds of other towns and cities across the UK.

Employment, earnings, housing affordability, health and wellbeing, education, traffic and 20 other factors were taken into account.

Here’s what you told us on Facebook…

Daniel Adams: “If people take a cursory look at the list they will see that by the looks of it Swindon is by far the largest town that high on the list.

“Everything above it appears to be small rural towns etc meaning we are actually well placed to be 45th given our population that’s approaching 250,000.

“We are better than Reading, Bath, Oxford Bristol, all of which are regularly cited by many in Swindon as being more desirable places to live than Swindon.

“But alas, the negativity of some in Swindon will shine through in the comments section. It’s quite funny actually, I find people who move to Swindon usually have the best things to say about it given they know what places that are not Swindon are like in comparison. It’s people who have lived here their whole lives that seem to be the most negative.”

Darran Broderick: “Empty shops, derelict buildings, drugs, traffic jams..... The bar must have been set very low.”

Kay Lyn Horsley: “To be honest, yes it’s a good place. We moved here five years ago from Newbury as it’s cheaper, nicer homes, nicer areas. I wouldn’t move back to Newbury. Everywhere has bad places. I live in the Abbey Meads area and I really like it.”

Gillian Smith: “What’s the matter with you lot? We’ve got jobs that allows us to enjoy ourselves, go on holidays,we have the chance to be independent and not be reliant on others.

“There are a lot of towns worse than Swindon, you just need to get of your backsides and widen your horizons.”

Becky Wilkinson: “What a joke! There’s beauty in my hometown but look at the centre!

Look at the streets, many struggle although if going on jobs of course Zurich and Nationwide are just two of their massive employers! And there’s beauty in the Lawns, Coate Water, Lydiard, but I don’t agree with this statement sorry!”

Kev Chandler: “Just after it was highlighted as the town with the highest rate of early pollution caused deaths.”

Andrew Witts: “It was once but councils and forward Swindon swept away the Old Swindon and replaced it with Ikea flat which is boring and bland.”

Shaun Dunham: “Top 5 maybe, top 10 at a stretch, but 45 does not mean “one of the best”.”

Ross Allen: “I love living in Swindon so I agree.”

Phillip Gwynne: “Years ago I’d of laughed my head off hearing that. But having lived in Swindon most of my life, now that I’m spending more time looking around, I’ve realised it’s not all that bad.

“My main problem with Swindon was, the bigger cities with more shops and tall iconic buildings that make them unique.

“But it’s the people, it’s difficult to say Swindon is better or worse than anywhere else. Swindon needs to look at the ‘forgotten’ treasures and try and bring them back to life.

“The Corn Exchange, looks great from the outside, surely someone could make a good investment. Even a good bar/club or restaurant. Or an educational centre, such as music studios where people can learn instruments, record tracks, learn DJ’ing. Endless opportunities.

“If not straight away, lots of temporary things, such as homeless shelters, and you could have college students in construction trades help work on projects. Just don’t give up. Yes I maybe letting my imagination run wild, but hey, why not?”
