A FEMALE special constable was injured by a flying glass bottle as rival fans clashed before Swindon Town's showdown with Exeter City.

The missile was thrown as trouble erupted close to the Tap and Barrel pub at 2pm on Saturday.

Police were forced to keep supporters of Town and their visitors from Devon apart in Manchester Road and onto Salisbury Street.

Traffic was disrupted in the area and an appeal for information has been issued.

Superintendent Adrian Burt said: “The game in general passed by without significant trouble, but it seems there was a minority of football fans intent on causing disorder and disruption to not only the other football fans, but also the wider community who were out in Swindon on Saturday afternoon.

“This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated and we are fully investigating to bring those responsible to justice.

“It is particularly distressing that a special constable was injured during the disorder. If you can help our enquiries in any way, then please call us.”

Police said the volunteer officer hurt suffered no lasting injury.

The game itself attracted a bumper crowd of more than 13,000, with Town winning 2-1 to extend their lead at the top of the League Two table.

A 21-year-old man from Swindon was arrested on suspicion of affray and conspiracy to commit violent disorder.

He has been released under investigation while our enquiries continue.

Anyone with information, mobile phone or dashcam footage should call James Purcell on 101.
