ARKELL’S is encouraging beer lovers to spend time with their nearest and dearest by giving a popular brew a Valentine’s makeover.

The brewery has temporarily renamed 3Bs as Bittersweet and its pubs will host events and activities designed to bring families, friends and couples together.

Head brewer Alex Arkell said: “As a business run by close family members, Valentine’s Day has a broader meaning for us.

“It is not just about celebrating love for your partner but is a date to appreciate others in your life too, like your family, friends, and even colleagues.

“Real love isn’t always easy to find – and getting there can be bittersweet – so this year we wanted to celebrate the beauty in the journey to finding our loved ones as well as love itself.

“So what better way to do that than enjoying a brew with those who have been on that journey with you?”

Bittersweet was originally known as Arkell’s Best Bitter Beer when it was first brewed in 1910.

It is an ale with a fruity and malty nose that has a lingering bittersweet flavour of balanced Maris Otter malt and traditional Fuggles and Golding hops.

It will be available throughout the Valentine’s period in a selection of Arkell’s pubs across Wiltshire.

The rebrand is a way of paying tribute to the enduring popularity of the beer.

Mr Arkell added: “As customers increasingly demand experiences with beer, Arkell’s pubs have created a comprehensive programme of activities to celebrate Valentine’s week.

“This includes specially designed food and drink menus, music gigs, love-themed quiz nights, and many more.

“It is the perfect occasion to enjoy the bittersweet notes of our gorgeous brew.

"I’m sure our customers will spend an awesome night out with their favourite people, enjoying the amazing menus and events our pubs will be offering.”

Some of Arkell’s pubs, including The Sun Inn in Swindon and The Angel in Royal Wootton Bassett, are organising social dining events this evening and will offer a free pint of Bittersweet to every punter who books a shared table.
