The 633 Squadron Air Training Corps in West Swindon is looking for new cadets to join its ranks.

Meeting at Tregoze Primary School twice a week for parade evenings, the group is run by volunteers and is open to boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 21.

Macauley Byrnes is the training officer for the cadets and says that although it is part of the RAF, it is not a recruitment tactic.

He told the Adver: “There’s no pressure to go into the air force after you leave us. It’s for people who like aviation and have a strong passion for it.

“With us you can get a gliding licence at the age of 16 and we do a lot of community events too.

“When you first come through the doors you’ll be enrolled onto an aviation BTEC, which looks really good on a CV.”

Alongside the obvious interest in flying, Macauley believes Cadets join for the social side of things as well.

He added: “Most people do come for the social aspect, we meet twice a week and we do weekend events so they see each other a lot.

“All the activities are cost free, we just ask for an £8 a month subscription which helps provide the uniform and equipment but other than that it’s all free of charge.

“If you have financial struggles then we’re able to support that, we want it to be available for everyone.”

If you think you or someone you know might be interested in the Air Cadets then the squadron will be hosting an equipment evening on March 6.

This will showcase the different aspects of the Cadets and what they do on a regular basis as well as the events that they attend.

Air Cadets help out with a number of community events, along with learning about aviation and the history of the RAF.

The next big event the squadron will be helping out with is the Lechlade Duck Race on May 8.

Parade evenings take place on Mondays and Fridays from 7pm to 9.30pm.
