A MAJOR Southampton road was closed off to motorists for hours after a huge tree fell down yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Tebourba Way between Oakley Road and Romsey Road at 3.41pm.

The tree had caused damage to a Hyundai car after falling across four lanes, and multiple police cars and fire engines were spotted at the scene, near the Tesco store.

Alternative routes were advised by Southampton City Council as they removed the tree.

At the time of reporting, a spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: “We were called at 3.41pm to a report of a tree falling on Tebourba Way.

“The tree caused damage to a Hyundai car, no injuries have been reported.

“The road is closed in both directions while the tree is being removed.”

The road was partially open northbound by 5.30pm.

As previously reported by the Daily Echo, a tree fell onto the same dual carriageway on March 9 last year and blocked the road.

It was also closed to motorists due to the tree falling across all four lanes.
