CAMPAIGNERS who want to raise awareness of gambling addictions are walking 100 miles from Reading FC to 10 Downing Street in 75 hours.

Members of The Big Step, a project that tries to get football to cut ties with gambling, will set off from Reading FC on Sunday, February 23, and walk to 10 Downing Street.

The team will pass through five other clubs who have shirt front gambling sponsors — Watford, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Fulham and QPR.

The final leg will be from Wembley to Downing Street where they will hand in a signed letter asking the government to review the Gambling Act and within that, to review the relationship between football and gambling.

The Big Step was founded by recovering gambling addict, James Grimes, last year, and tries to raise awareness of gambling addiction and suicide and promote treatment and support measures.

James explained: "This overwhelming addiction destroyed most aspects of my life, I couldn't watch a football match without a bet on - losing £100,000, losing relationships, jobs, using it do deal with family tragedy and am still feeling all those consequences now.

"I am now nearly two years clean but firmly believe the reason my gambling escalated was the normalisation and glamorisation of gambling advertisement within football."

The project forms part of Gambling with Lives, a charity set up by bereaved families of young men who took their own life as a direct result of their gambling addiction.
