Strikers at Brogans Cafe will get extra backing tomorrow morning.

The workers have been striking since Monday after they were unable to hold discussions with the owners over a number of issues including pay, rotas, hygiene and safe kitchen equipment.

The new rally will be held from 10am to 12pm and is being supported by the Swindon Trade Union and the Swindon People's Assembly.

Jon Timbrell of the Swindon Trade Union Council has backed the strike saying: "The demands that the workers at Brogan’s are putting forward aren’t radical or unreasonable.

"Everyone deserves a living wage, a secure contract, adequate equipment at work and to be represented by a Trade Union.

"I have been at the picket line during the week, and I’ve been really heartened to see the support local people have shown the strike.

"The rally on Saturday will be an opportunity for the people of Swindon to stand shoulder to shoulder for decent conditions at work.

"We call on the management at Brogans to reconsider their current hostile stance and engage with their workers to find a resolution to the dispute.

"I think they have made a serious miscalculation that the people of Swindon will continue to patronise a café that treats its workers so appallingly.

"We want to see a swift resolution, but we will stand in total solidarity with the workers for as long as it takes."

Tony Hillier of Swindon People's Assembly threw his weight behind the campaign, adding: "Poor working conditions have crept up on society. High rents and low wages have driven people to put up with so much.

"The working conditions at Brogan’s are not poor – they are atrocious with health implications of a broken dishwasher and zero hours contracts.

"Swindon’s People’s Assembly is proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with exploited workers who are standing up for their own, and all worker’s rights and saying ‘Enough is enough’."

When approached by the Adver at the start of the strike action, owner of the cafe Vajay Kumar hit back at the strike saying: "They don’t know what they’re doing.

"There is hot water working here, everybody can make allegations.

“This strike has had a lot of impact. We’ve lost two days sales and I will take them to court.

"I will not take them back. I’m teaching them a lesson.”
