Supermarket chain Lidl is set to open a new store at Greenbridge Retail Park in the old Homebase unit.

Planning and licensing applications were submitted to Swindon Borough Council with Lidl confirming it would like to open the store later this year.

It added the new store at the Orbital Shopping Centre, also previously home to Homebase, will be opening in “early 2020.”

Here’s what you said on Facebook:

Karen Curtis: “Isn’t that a little bit close to the one they already have by Wickes?

“Could do with a furniture village or a toy store.”

Becci Smith: “Brilliant. Another Lidl for this Lidl and B&M town.”

Sarah Jane Lewis: “Oh wonderful, another food shop, just what we need. Like we’ve not got enough in Swindon.

“Should have been a bigger and better Primark or some other clothing shop would have been good.”

Hayley Cartwright: “We’d happily take one of your Lidl’s or Aldi’s in Marlborough.”

Rebecca Dunne: “I’m all for generating jobs in the town but another Lidl.

“Why not a Smyths, New Look, Marks & Spencer or Ikea.”

Zoey Flowers: “Just what this town needs, another Lidl.”

Stephanie Trueman: “Really? There is a Lidl not far from Greenbridge.”

Jonathon Sharp: “Isn’t this getting a Lidl too much with all these supermarkets.”

Debbie Froud: “We don’t need another Lidl or Aldi for that matter. Plenty already in Swindon.”

Tony Martin: “Hey, at least it’s not another MuckDonald's or a coffee shop.”

Molly Hunt: “How many supermarkets does one town need. A regeneration of the town centre would be better.”

Dave Durston: “Lidl and Aldi are the corner shop of the next generation.”

Collett Bird: “We don’t need another Lidl that close, put a Primark there.”

Annie Leadbeater: “Don’t like Lidl so won’t be using it.

Why can’t we have something new for a change instead of B&M, Home Bargains and Aldi.

“How many of these stores does one town need? Heard Lidl were opening one in the Orbital too.”

Steve Parsons: “Good, the more Lidls and Aldis the better for people on a little budget.

And it will give more jobs for people in Swindon.”

Elaine Wade: “Boring same old shops, this town needs some decent shops.

“This is why people go and shop out of town.”

Aileen Leppard: “A Farm Foods would be good this side of town.”

Katie Piper: “Seems a Lidl bit unnecessary.”

Jon Davis: “That’s cool, but when is the Smyth’s Toy Store opening there?”

Zowie Seymour: “Better than it sitting empty.”

Allan Bott: “At least empty retail units are being filled and jobs created. What’s the issue?”

Joe Prinzi: “Looks like Brexit is stopping the German investment in the country.”

Gav Hollands: “All these people moaning probably never shop in Greenbridge anyway, hence the shops closing.”

David Shephard: “Don’t worry people, it’s only a Lidl store.”
