LYDIARD Parkrun organisers have urged people to "be kind" after a volunteer was verbally abused by a member of the public at Saturday’s run.

On Facebook organisers said: “A reminder from everyone that Parkrun is a place to enjoy and be happy. Sadly, today one volunteer was subjected to some unkind comments from a spectator and I really hope that it doesn’t put them off running or volunteering again in the future.”

In a nod to the events surrounding the tragic death of TV presenter Caroline Flack last week, the social media post added: “There has been much in the media over the last few weeks about being kind and appreciating the efforts of others and that is what we need more of so, next week, please be loud and proud in thanking volunteers; including the 'invisible' volunteers who do the set-up, take-down, course checks and run reports.”

Organiser Emma Sperring told the Adver the incident on Saturday morning was very much a one-off. “We take our own measures at Parkrun to ensure the event’s inclusive. It’s crucial people feel relaxed and welcome and there’s no negativity.”

The Lydiard event celebrates its 10th anniversary next month.
