THE Adver's Rewind supplement this week focused on the West Swindon Centre in the 1980s.

It showcased the days when of French hypermarket Carrefour filled the space now taken by Asda and gave an insight into shopping before the rise of online retail.

And readers certainly enjoyed the trip down memory lane.

Here’s what you said on Facebook ...

David Gartside: “Had an interview for a job there, I actually walked through the store when they were still putting up all the shelving.

“No high-vis jackets, wouldn’t be allowed now.”

Sarah Frewin: “My dad worked there when it opened and they used to thrown wonderful Christmas parties for all the families.

“I was only little but remember them still.”

Jane Howcutt: “I used to bunk off school in Marlborough and catch the free Carrefour bus that picked up in Marlborough High Street and then go to the Link Centre to ice skate and still be home by 4pm.”

Becks Thompson: “I used to absolutely love playing in the play area in the middle while my mum was shopping.

“Used to be great when it was Carrefour.”

Tina Mumble: “Did my first work experience there. Then passed out in the rest room by morning coffee break.”

Kathryn Jones: “I worked here in the 80s, loved it and only left to have my first baby in 1988.”

Mark Lewis: “They still have the same flooring.”

Al Smith: “Remember it well, totally changed the face of shopping in Swindon and a sign of things to come when it came to shopping.

“Prior to that even the large district shopping centres like Cavendish Square never had an anchor store as large as the Carrefour, the West Swindon Centre was very much based on the French hypermarket model.”

And here are a selection of comments from our website...

Captain Picard: “Ah, back in the days before barcodes, when the checkout girl had to type in each price manually. I dread to think of how many pricing errors much have happened then.

“I remember when Carrefour first opened they had a publicity splurge in Swindon with car stickers saying: “Spoil a Traffic Warden’s day - park free at Carrefour!”.

“Then again, in those days major supermarket shopping meant going to the Sainsbury’s in the town centre.

“I also remember that they had a Carrefour electrical store where Blockbusters used to be and a Dixons where the chemists is now.

“Also where the car park with a car wash is now, there used be a garden centre called Sandfords.

“That’s not to mention Video Solent around the corner, with their extensive collection of Betamax and VHS tapes.”

PowerToThePeople: “My friends and I used to get the bus there from Chiseldon to buy our 80s leggings. Remember it well, was huge to us back then."

Simon Tilbury: “Looks like most of it hasn’t had a lick of paint since.”

Lorraine Clarkson: “They used to have a stall selling different flavour ice creams.”

Jennie Laine: “We shopped at Carrefour from day one and still shop in Asda.”

Karen Brookes: “I worked there in temporary buildings while it was being built then I moved over and worked in the non-food office. Good days.”

Karen Tayler: “I started working in the petrol station two weeks before the store opened in October 1981. Great memories of my five years there.”

Sammie Coe: “I worked there in the garden centre, loved it.”
