SWINDON Lions Club is cancelling its annual fireworks spectacular at the Polo Ground.

The club lost thousands of pounds last November as attendance numbers continued to drop and says it cannot afford to go on any longer.

The 2019 crowd was around a third of the size of the 6,300 who packed in to watch the show just four years ago.

Here is how you reacted to the news on Facebook...

Lisa Rimes: "The weather has a big part in these events. It's a shame they can't see if this year's will be more popular, then make the decision. No two years are the same, there are so many events being held around the town usually on the same day, maybe if they all spoke to each other and arranged different days it might make a difference."

Christine Wills: "This is a shame. I don’t have an issue with a display once a year and have been many a times to this display and it’s always been very good. The weather was awful this year so not surprised there was a bad turnout. Weather and price hikes are enough to put a lot of people off going."

Nick 'Trueman: "It tickles me that the biggest driver for everyone saying this is good news relates to the wildlife it impacts. For hundreds of years it hasn’t been an issue, why all of a sudden is it now? As for dogs... there are no dogs scared of fireworks at birth... it’s the fault of the owner not exposing them to the correct environments at a younger age, fact."

Dani Batstone: "Oh no! I don't want to go all the way to Lydiard for fireworks. Would much rather have big one-day displays like this than people setting them off for weeks either side in their gardens."

Trudie Boath: "There are plenty of other displays around. The military base at Lyneham do a big display that is open to the public and their entry fee is really cheap in comparison to Lydiard. They also have food stalls and a fun fair."

Abi Bell: "Such a shame. I personally don’t go to the Polo Ground anymore as my son prefers the ‘no bang’ fireworks displays. If the Polo Ground did this, we would be sure to return."

Stephen Redford: "Far too many fireworks across Swindon as it is.. personally I would seek tighter controls on when allowed and how they are available for purchase."

Derek Rutland: "They should only be organised fireworks to stop people getting hurt. Kids are getting hold of them and doing silly things with them, that’s why I would like only organised displays. One more thing is for weeks and weeks before and after November 5 there’s fireworks and it’s not good for pets. It will be missed but as it’s been wet people don't go. I hope they do think it over."

Dave Durston: "For a long time now, everything that Lydiard Park has offered has trumped Polo Ground's display! It's not that people are disinterested it's just there are better value alternative displays out there, we used to go to the Polo ground every year but we got fed up with the commercialisation of it, with a growing fun fair, stalls and fast food places it became less about the fireworks and more about the attractions."

Kim Simone Kyson: "It’s a brilliant display but sadly the weather has got to be a huge part in last year. I personally think it’s great, using park and ride to get there, and it’s been something Swindon has known for a long time so it will be a very sad day if it is cancelled. I would do a poll/questionnaire and ask the public their opinion - maybe something other than standing/wading in a muddy field is putting them off."

Tracey Thomas: "So sad. I understand why, but still sad. But you hate to think all the fireworks that will now go off in your next door neighbours' garden at random times. At least with the display it was done at a certain time and would end within a certain time."
