Coate Water’s car park has been shut by police and Swindon council.

It came after police officers stuck leaflets to a large number of cars at the country park on Friday warning of the importance of complying with the government’s coronavirus lockdown rules.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “Yesterday officers on routine patrols saw a large number of cars parked in the Coate Water car park, so posted leaflets on the vehicles to advise that people should not be driving to places to exercise.

“Following consultation with Swindon Borough Council, a decision was then made to close the car park.”

Those living nearby say dog walkers have taken to parking at the other side of the country park in Broome Manor.

Car parks at Mouldon Hill, Lydiard and Barbury Castle remain open on Saturday afternoon.
