Swindon Borough Council has provided hotel accommodation to the town’s homeless during the coronavirus pandemic.

A total of 21 rough sleepers are now staying in rooms in town centre hotels following government advice for people to go into lockdown.

The local authority says they will be provided with enough food for seven days, including breakfast, lunch, a snack and dinner.

Here’s what you told us on Facebook and the Advertiser website:

Kazzarina McSpiers: “If they can do that when there is a crisis, why not help those poor people when its freezing cold or chucking it down with rain?

“We should be looking after them all the time, not just when there is a crisis.”

Vincenza Bretti: “Good. Maybe they can permanently house them.

“And I hope the young man who is always sat outside Tesco wrapped in a dirty quilt in the freezing cold weather has a nice warm room to sleep in too.”

Donna Tofield: “The homeless are in a crisis every day.

“But too many people only see a problem when it directly affects them.”

Tracy Creighton: “About time. Why does it need this to happen before we help the homeless?

“Most of the homeless don’t want to be on the streets. Give them a break.

“Now let’s help them get back on their feet while they are in the hotel room.”

Kimberley Tribe: “No hotel will put up the homeless in normal times.

“They earn too much money from paying guests. Sad but true.”

Andy Collins: “In a rich country we should have no homelessness at any time.

“Amazing what can be done when they want to."

Vinnie Randhawa: “Why only help them during a crisis?

“There are many empty shops, buildings in the town to home these people.”

Rich Tindall: “Why is it so hard to help them during normal times then?”

Abi Finneran: “The day they kick them out onto the streets will be awkward, otherwise they would have done this already.”

Christophe Scellier: “Finally some good news - despite this being only a start as I am sure there is many more.”

Donna Shakespeare: “Good. Bless them.”

Helen Pomfret: “Let’s hope this support can continue after!”

Lisa Elliott: Well done, you have a massive heart.”

Sam Ruck: “I’m also worried about that gent at Tesco in Ocotal Way who was wrapped up in his duvet Saturday.

“I gave him a sandwich but he looked frozen”

George Tailor: “This is great news. Homeless people suffer every day, regardless of infection. It would be nice to see this assurance on offer every day.

“Maybe stop Universal Credit, which is driving homelessness numbers ever higher.”

Matt Jury: “Hopefully the council will help them once all this is over, maybe take some of the cash they want to waste on Fleming Way and house these people permanently, it's sad that it has taken this outbreak for the council to show some compassionate thoughts towards others.

“Knowing this council as we all do I very much doubt it will continue. They’re too busy wasting our money on white elephant projects.”

'Sushigal007': “What good news. Hopefully the help for these people will continue after the lockdown.”

'ClearMind2019': “A roof over someone’s head isn’t a magic wand.

“Where is the drug support to get the users clean? How will the homeless fill their time productively?”
