MORE posters and better signage will be used to help people keep their distance from one another when shopping in Royal Wootton Bassett.

Councillors in the town agreed to focus on those measures when they met to discuss their Covid-19 plan, proposed by Paul Heaphy and Steve Bucknell.

Among the other ideas under consideration were blocking off every fourth parking space in the High Street, the removal of charges in the Borough Fields car park and relocating the taxi rank. Encouraging people to avoid busy areas and times was also debated on June 30.

At the full town council meeting last Thursday, signs and foot markings were seen as the way forward in a bid to prevent the disease spreading.

Coun Heaphy said: “We came to the conclusion that we felt that the right approach was to use signage.

"We chose this because when we went out to the High Street on Wednesday morning it wasn’t busy at all.

“What we have agreed is a number of two different posters – one will be signs which will go on lampposts and trees to reiterate social distancing rules. And the second will be floor mats like the ones you see in the shops in pinpoint areas of the High Street.

“The areas we’ve noticed are around Dan’s Deli, Superdrug, the TSB cashpoint and outside Bassett Bakery.

“We have also asked Wiltshire Council to investigate what it would entail to block off every fourth parking space so we will have to wait for them to get back to us.”

All of the councillors who attended agreed with the decision.

It will be a short-term measure and if there is a spike in the area they will look to make more changes.

Town clerk Johnathan Bourne, said: “There was certainly an agreement to put up posters that were required.

“This was down to the working party to do and that’s what happened.

"Posters are being worked on and we have got a small supply already and more are coming.

“There’s nothing that needs to be done at this moment in time, we will just have to see if anything changes.”
