The ice rink at the Link Centre will not be reopening on August 1, despite government giving the go ahead.

Better, the charity that runs the leisure centre, revealed it would not reopen the ice rink due to low demand in August and it would take too long to prepare the centre.

It will instead look for to reopen in autumn, but did not reveal a specific date. The rest of the centre is due to reopen on July 25.

A statement from Better said: "We are delighted government is continuing to re-open sport and leisure facilities and are looking forward to opening the doors to many of our gyms, studios and pools next weekend.

"During lockdown, we emptied the ice rink at the Link Centre to reduce unnecessary costs and minimise the environmental impact.

"During August we normally experience low demand for our ice rink and because it would take up to three weeks to get the it back up and running, we have taken the decision not to reopen but to plan for an autumn relaunch."
