From the picturesque Cotswolds villages to the beautiful countryside we call home, there are an abundance of film locations within Wiltshire. 

Our county has seen plenty of A-listers come and go such as Julie Andrews, Daniel Radcliffe and Pierce Brosnan. Here are some of the biggest blockbusters:

1.The World is Not Enough, 1999

James Bond uncovers a nuclear plot while protecting an oil heiress from her former kidnapper, an international terrorist who can't feel pain.

Starring:  Pierce Brosnan, Sophie Marceau, Robert Carlyle 

Wiltshire location: Swindon

The old Motorola HQ at Groundwell was set as a Turkish oil refinery in the second Bond film to be shot in Swindon. 

2. The Black Spot, 2019 

Based on the hit short film Full Disclosure, The Black Spot follows an agent in the International Off-world Trade Federation as he uncovers some dark secrets.

Starring:  Lloyd Kaufman, Len Kabasinski, Jack Klaff 

Wiltshire location: Across Wiltshire and Swindon

The 21 year-old filmmaker, Oliver Rogers,based the film in Wiltshire and used many Swindon locations throughout the film including Milton Road, Stanford House, The Beehive, Longs Bar and some local houses.

3. Far From the Madding Crowd, 1967

Bathsheba Everdene, a willful, flirtatious, young woman, unexpectedly inherits a large farm and is romantically pursued by three very different men.

Starring:  Julie Christie, Peter Finch, Alan Bates

Wiltshire location: Devizes

Swindon Advertiser:

The scenes set at "Casterbridge" (Hardy's Dorchester), at the Corn Exchange and the hiring fair in the square, were shot at Devizes at Wiltshire, no doubt because of its large market square.

 A few scenes were also shot near Devizes, in the Vale of Pewsey. The cobbled street apparently leading up to Casterbridge's market-place is Shaftesbury's Gold Hill .

4. Pride and Prejudice, 2005

Sparks fly when spirited Elizabeth Bennet meets single, rich, and proud Mr. Darcy. But Mr. Darcy reluctantly finds himself falling in love with a woman beneath his class.

Starring:  Keira Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen, Brenda Blethyn

Wiltshire location: Stourhead Landscape Garden

The 2005 production of Pride and Prejudice features the 18th-century landscaped garden, Stourhead, and one of its enchanting temples. The Temple of Apollo, set above the tranquil lake, was used as the location for Mr Darcy’s first and futile proposal to Lizzie. Afterwards an offended Lizzie makes her exit across the Palladian Bridge.

5. The Princess Diaries

Mia Thermopolis has just found out that she is the heir apparent to the throne of Genovia. With her friends Lilly and Michael Moscovitz in tow, she tries to navigate through the rest of her sixteenth year.

Wiltshire location: Longford Castle

Swindon Advertiser:

While much of the film's action is set and shot in San Francisco, Wiltshire is used as a stand-in for the fictional European state of Genovia, the small realm which is the Princess's birthright.

6. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

An ancient prophecy seems to be coming true when a mysterious presence begins stalking the corridors of a school of magic and leaving its victims paralyzed.

Starring:  Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson

Wiltshire location: Lacock Abbey

The hushed classroom, in which Harry becomes the object of suspicion after speaking parseltongue, is the Chapter House of Lacock Abbey and the corridor outside is the Abbey’s Cloister.

7. War Horse, 2011

Young Albert enlists to serve in World War I after his beloved horse is sold to the cavalry. Albert's hopeful journey takes him out of England and to the front lines as the war rages on.

Starring: Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson, David Thewlis

Wiltshire location: Castle Combe

Swindon Advertiser:

The horse, Joey, is bought and sold at the horse fair, located at the Market Cross in Castle Combe. 

8. Barry Lyndon, 1975

An Irish rogue wins the heart of a rich widow and assumes her dead husband's aristocratic position in 18th-century England.

Director: Stanley Kubrick

Starring:  Ryan O'Neal, Marisa Berenson, Patrick Magee

Wiltshire location: Wilton House and Stourhead

The interior of ‘Castle Hackton’ was mostly filmed inside Wilton House whilst the gardens featured in the film are those of Stourhead. 

9. 1917, 2019

April 6th, 1917. As a regiment assembles to wage war deep in enemy territory, two soldiers are assigned to race against time and deliver a message that will stop 1,600 men from walking straight into a deadly trap.

Starring: Dean-Charles Chapman, George MacKay, Daniel Mays

Wiltshire location: Salisbury Plain

Salisbury Plain was used to play northern France in the film. The area is over 300-square-miles and featured six different film locations. The tunnel scene was filmed in a barn at Salisbury Plain, as was a farmhouse near to the village of Shrewton.

10. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, 2009

As Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) begins his sixth year at Hogwarts, he discovers an old book marked as "the property of the Half-Blood Prince" and begins to learn more about Lord Voldemort's (Ralph Fiennes') dark past.

Wiltshire location: Lacock

In the later film of the Harry Potter saga, Lacock was used as a filming location again but instead of the Abbey the village itself was featured. Slughorn’s house, where Dumbledore takes Harry, can be seen on the west side of Chapel Hill just off Church Street.
