TWO people are in custody after a taxi driver and police officer were assaulted last night.
The taxi driver collected a man and a woman, both in their 30s, but was assaulted by the man in Frobisher Drive. The Faringdon pair had pre-booked the vehicle.
When police arrived on the scene and arrested the man at 9.10pm, an officer was hit in the head and kicked in the leg by the female passenger. She continuously spat in the police van on the way to Gablecross.
The man was arrested on suspicion of common assault and section 5 public order. The woman was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and criminal damage.
Supt Adrian Burt said: “Fortunately, the taxi driver and the police officer were not seriously injured during this incident and both remained working their shifts, however we will simply not tolerate behaviour of this kind on our streets.
“Police officers come to work every day to protect those living within our communities and being assaulted whilst carrying out their duties is not acceptable.”
