It’s been the heart of Walcot since the late 1950s when it opened with a couple of general grocers, a greengrocer and a chippie.

Over decades since then Sussex Square has gone through several transformations, the latest less than five years ago.

Buildings have come and gone in the complex. The Bulldog pub, once a hub of the area's social life, was demolished and replaced in 2015 with shops and a library. The community shop, which moved into one of the units, has been helping the poor and the vulnerable in the area for 20 years, raising money for good causes and providing low cost clothes and furniture.
