The Cineworld cinema at Shaw Ridge reopened from lockdown in July with a cutting edge new addition – a 4DX screen.

It gives movie-goers the feeling of actually being in the film with moving seats, water, fog and smells.

Reporter Connor Mountford went along to watch Jurassic Park.

Before going to Cineworld I always thought 4D was a cheap experience that you’d find at Thorpe Park.

I figured I’d just be watching a film and some water would be sprayed in my face, then I’d leave.

But that wasn’t the case at the new 4DX screen at Shaw Ridge’s Cineworld.

Before you even enter the screen the ticket checker at the podium makes you read a poster (almost the same size as a human) that explains the whole experience to you and what you should be doing to prepare.

It says the obvious health and safety warnings – don’t go if you’re pregnant or have heart problems – but what stood out to me the most was the line 'make sure all personal belongings are secured to your person'.

Straight away my mind started to change, what was I about to experience?

To try out the 4DX screen for the first time I’d picked Jurassic Park – the T-Rex stomping made me think it would be a good experience.

A standard adult ticket for this 2D 4DX showing was around £11 but the disclaimed says a 3D film might cost more. It’s also worth noting the normal price is almost £14 but because this is an older film it was cheaper.

So in I go. We find our seats and sit back ready to enjoy.

Straight away you can experience the movement. The chairs fully move as if on a simulator ride and you feel the hum of the helicopter and tyres beneath your Jeep as you race away from a T-Rex.

The film? Well, it was Jurassic Park so it’s already a classic. But it’s safe to say this 4DX experience only enhanced the movie.

It really immersed you in the events of the film and I was left tense and nervous, even though I knew how it ended.

Overall, the new 4DX experience isn’t like those cheap experiences you find at a theme park.

It’s something that adds a new dimension to the film you’re watching and really enhances everything.

From the water spray in your face to the smell of the jungle (and the roar of the T-Rex), this is an experience I’ve never experienced in the cinema before.

It’s worth adding a note about Cineworld’s mask policy.

Officially you must wear a mask throughout your experience, unless you’re eating or drinking.
