A NEW homeless support group has launched in Swindon.

Swindon Street Friends has been set up by three women who say they want to fight the cause of homelessness in the town.

Debs Flowerday, Sherendee Faulkner and Rochelle Trebble launched the group in August. It will provide hot meals, snack packs and hot and cold drinks to their street friends on Thursdays from 7pm outside the tented market on Market Street.

Debs said: “Groups like these are vital for the homeless people’s survival. But it’s almost more than just the feeding side of things.

“It’s them being listened to and spoken to as human beings and real people, not just someone you walk past in the street.

Sherendee added: “It definitely helps with their mental health. We get some people who are miserable when they come to us, but when they leave they are happy. Even if it’s just for a short while, it’s about more than just giving a hot meal.”

The group has 12 volunteers and has been giving out roughly 25 hot meals each night. They will also supply hats gloves, scarves and socks as the weather gets colder.
